Periodic trend of electronegativity of the elements.

A arbitrary numerical scale of electronegativity values of most of the elements in the periodic table was developed by Linus Pauling.

The electronegativity trends of elements are shown in the diagram. Arrows show the direction of INCREASE in electronegativity.

In general,

  • Metals have low electronegativity values.
  • Nonmetals have high electronegativity values.

Fluorine, located in the upper right-hand-corner of the periodic table is the most electronegative element. Cesium, located in the lower left-hand-corner of the periodic table is the least electronegative element.

A high value indicates that an element has a strong attraction for bonded electrons.

A low value indicates that an element does not have a strong attraction for bonded electrons.

Electronegativity can be used for bond classification.
