Darmstadtium was first synthesized in 1994 at the Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung mbH (GSI) in Darmstadt, Germany. In 2001, a joint IUPAC-IUPAP Working Party (IWP) had confirmed the discovery of element number 110. In 2003, IUPAC officially recommended the name darmstadtium. This continues the long-established tradition of naming an element after the place of its discovery.
