Named after Albert Einstein, the element was discovered in 1952. It was first detected from the debris of a hydrogen bomb explosion at Eniwetok in the Pacific. Tons of radioactive coral in the blast area were sifted and examined. Einsteinium was later used in nuclear reactors.
