Register online. All conference registration is conducted online. After July 23, registration is on site only.

Q. What is included in the conference registration fee? Top

The conference registration fee includes:

  • Attendance at all sessions including the opening Reg Friesen Lecture, the closing plenary session, all complimentary regular sessions/workshops, and the demonstration series
  • Conference program and abstracts
  • Sunday Night Mixer (July 31)
  • Continental Breakfast in the foyer of the Chan Centre (August 1) 
  • Ice Cream Social (August 1)
  • Exhibitors' Wine and Cheese (August 2)
  • 1 ticket for the Closing Salmon BBQ at the Museum of Anthropology (August 3)

Q. How do I make reservations to stay on campus? Top

To reserve your accommodation with Conferences and Accommodation at UBC, you may check availability and make your booking using the convenient online reservation system. You will require a credit card to guarantee your reservation.

If you prefer, you may also make contact the Reservations Office by e-mail at  reservations@housing.ubc.ca, or by telephone at 604-822-1000. Be sure to indicate that you will be attending the ChemEd conference.

Q. How do I make reservations at the conference hotel(s), and are there discounted rates available for Conference attendees? Top

There are a number of hotels near UBC in Vancouver and near the Vancouver International Airport in Richmond that are offering discount rates for ChemEd 2005 conference attendees. Book your hotel room early to take advantage of exclusive discount offerings. Read instructions for booking with these hotels.

Q. When is the last day to register for the Early Bird registration fee? Top

Registrations for the Early Bird Conference Fee will be accepted until May 20, 2005.

Q. When is the last day to register for the standard registration fee? Top

The last day to register online at the standard registration fee is July 23, 2005. After July 23, the registration fee will increase and you must contact the Conference Secretariat to register. ChemEd 2005 Secretariat: registration@housing.ubc.ca, or 604-822-1050. Registration is on site only.

Q. Are there keynote or exhibits-only tickets? Top

No. These features are included in the conference registration fee; there are no passes offered for individual events.

There are, however, several paid workshops available to sign up for. Any fee charged is on a "cost-recovery only" basis in consideration of materials provided during these sessions. Registration for these workshops can be done on-line during the regular registration process. Descriptions and costs for these presentations as well as all of the regular offerings are available on the website by selecting "View Presentations".

Q. Can I bring a guest to the conference? Top

Registered delegates may bring accompanying family or friends with them to ChemEd but please note that guests will not be permitted to attend any conference sessions/workshops, or after-hours activities that require a name-badge for entry (exhibit hall, Sunday night mixer, ice cream social or exhibitor wine and cheese event). There is however a variety of paid tours and children's activities for which you can register accompanying guests when you complete the online registration.

Conference delegates may also purchase tickets for accompanying persons to attend the Mole Breakfast, Mole Run, and the closing salmon BBQ. In addition to these conference activities, there are a number of attractions and activities for your guests to enjoy nearby--including UBC's outdoor pool, nearby beaches, the Museum of Anthropology, the Botanical Gardens, and more.

Q. How do I get on the ChemEd 2005 mailing list? Top

Please subscribe to the ChemEd 2005 mailing list at

http://nobel.scas.bcit.ca/chemed2005/mailingList.htm

and fill in your information. ChemEd 2005 will forward the mailing list to the ChemEd 2007 Planning Committee.

Q. Where can I find a hard-copy registration form? Top

All registrations must be made via the online registration system. Hard-copy forms are not available. After July 23, registration is on site only.

Q. What forms of payment will be accepted for the registration fee? Top

All registrations must be made via the online registration system.  During the registration process you will be required to provide payment by credit card (VISA, MasterCard or Amex), or you may send a  cheque in Canadian funds ( business or personal) by mail.

All cheques must be accompanied by the hard-copy form which you must print off as prompted by the system if you select "Pay by Mail."  Purchase orders from schools and universities will not be accepted as payment.

Q. How can I get a formal receipt for my registration fee? Top

If you register online, a formal receipt for your registration fee payment will be sent to you by email. Please note that your credit card statement will reflect "UBC Conference Centre web" for the fee payment. If you pay by mail, a formal receipt will sent to you by either email or mail.

Q. May I photograph or videotape keynotes or sessions? Top

No recording is permitted with still cameras, videotape cameras, or audio recording of any sessions (including keynotes, or general sessions) at ChemEd 2005.

Q. Where can I purchase meals on campus? Are there any arrangements for special dietary needs? Top

Due to reduced cafeteria service on campus during the summer season, delegates are not able to purchase meals on a drop-in basis.  Delegates wishing to eat in the cafeteria must purchase tickets in advance (i.e. during the online registration process) to ensure adequate quantities and staffing. Delegates will not be able to purchase meal tickets on site. Click here for meal pricing and details.

When completing the 'meals' page in the online registration process, delegates have the opportunity to list any special dietary needs but please note that although we are collecting this information to assist catering, due to the large number of delegates expected we are not able to make special arrangements on an individual basis.

Q. In what language is the presentations given? Top

English. There will not be any simultaneous translation.

Q. Is there a special rate for students? Top

Yes. We have Student Teacher rate. This applies to individuals still in attendance at a university, teachers college, normal school, etc. who are studying for the profession. To verify your student teacher status, you may be required to show a valid student ID or other documentation at the registration desk.

Q. Is there a place where I can check my e-mail on campus? Do I need to bring my computer with me? Top

Guests staying on campus at either the Gage Towers or West Coast Suites can request Internet access at check-in. The cost is $10.00 + 7% GST per day. The type of access differs between buildings: Gage Towers offers high-speed cable access, while the West Coast Suites offers wireless access only. All guests must provide their own computer.

Free Internet access is available at the computer terminals located on the main and lower levels of the Student Union Building, across from Walter Gage Residence.

You may access your e-mail free-of-charge at computer terminals on the main floor of the Student Union Building, located across the road from the Walter Gage Residence.

Guests can also purchase wireless access and must have a Wi-Fi compatible network card or laptop that supports 802.11g (or 802.11b).

Q. What is the weather like typically in August in Vancouver, British Columbia? Top

Temperatures are usually warm, with daytime temperatures in the range of 22-28 oC in Vancouver. A light jacket/windbreaker is advised in the evenings.

Q. How do I get to UBC from the airport? Top

Delegates must make their own travel arrangements to/from Vancouver International Airport to UBC campus. Although there is no direct bus service from the airport, there is a ready supply of taxis and airport limousines available. Taxi fare is approximately $30.00 Canadian from the airport to UBC Campus. Car rentals are also available at the airport should you choose to rent a vehicle during your stay. For driving directions go to http://www.ubcconferences.com/directions_gage.asp. The drive to UBC from the airport is approximately 25 minutes.

You may also visit the Vancouver Public Transit website for bus schedules but please note that there is no direct public transit from the airport to UBC and you will be required to transfer buses.

Q. Will there be parking on campus at the conference? Top

A limited amount of paid parking is available on a first-come-first-served basis for guests of the Gage Towers and West Coast Suites. The cost per night per vehicle is $5.00 Canadian plus 7% Federal Goods and Services Tax. You can request a pass and register your vehicle during check in at the Gage Front Desk.

Conference attendees not staying at the Gage Towers or West Coast Suite will find parking in a number of paid lots operated by UBC Parking. Rates vary by type of lot. For information on rates and locations please visit www.parking.ubc.ca and click on Visitor Parking.

Q. What is the cancellation policy? Top

Cancellation and Refund Policy
Registration fees, less a $35.00 administration charge, will be refunded if your cancellation is received by the ChemEd Conference Secretariat in writing by July 15, 2005. AFTER JULY 15, THERE WILL BE NO REFUNDS.

NOTE: All refunds will be processed after the conference. No refund will be given for people who do not show up for the paid workshops.

All ChemEd 2005 attendees are invited to collect their conference badges and registration materials from the Registration Desk, operational hours and locations are below.
