Oxidation Reduction Reactions

    Topics you should learn:

  1. Oxidation Numbers

  2. Balancing Oxidation Reduction Reactions

Oxidation Numbers

Before you can balance redox reactions you must be comfortable with assigning oxidation numbers to atoms in compounds and ions.

The rules for assigning oxidation numbers can be located by clicking the "redox" button in the buttons bar below.

Do you need examples to review?

Go ahead and try a few problems in assigning oxidation numbers.

Balancing Oxidation Reduction Reactions

In each oxidation reduction (redox) reactions one species is oxidized, and another species is reduced.

We can write an oxidation half-reaction equation for the species that undergoes oxidation. Similarly, we can write a reduction half-reaction equation for the species that undergoes reduction.

Click here if you need step-by-step examples of balancing redox reactions.
