CALCULATIONS BASED ON FORMULAE

7.5 - Calculations involving Avogadro's number

7.5.1 - Mass to mole conversion and vice-versa

Whenever you want to convert quantities from one unit to another, you need to use the appropriate conversion factor. The conversion factor must have units of the two quantities involved.

To convert between mass in grams and moles,

Conversion factor is:

atomic mass (section 7.3) or molar mass (section 7.4)

because these quantities relate grams to moles since atomic mass or molar mass have units of

To convert:

you need to multiply by the atomic mass of the atom. you need to divide by the atomic mass of the atom.

you need to multiply by the molar mass of the molecule. you need to divide by the molar mass of the molecule.
