Unit 10 ACIDS & BASES AND IONIC REACTIONS

Objectives

On completion of the unit you should be able to:

  1. list some properties of acids and bases.
  2. define acids and bases.
  3. given the name write the formula (and vice versa) for common binary acids and oxyacids.
  4. write equations to describe the formation of some common acids and bases.
  5. explain the difference between strong and weak acids.
  6. predict the products of neutralization reactions.
  7. solve problems involving concentrations of acids and bases and neutralization reactions.
  8. write net ionic equations for acid base reactions.
  9. define pH.
  10. given the pH calculate the concentration of H+ ions and vice versa.
  11. given the concentration of hydrogen ions use the ion product constant of water to calculate the concentration of hydroxide ions.
  12. define and give examples of weak and strong electrolytes.
