Experiment 9 - pH, Acid-Base Indicators, Buffers

Apparatus:

  1. pH meter
  2. Top loading balance
  3. Buret
  4. Buret clamp
  5. 10 mL graduated cylinder
  6. 100 mL graduated cylinder
  7. Two 100 mL beakers
  8. Two 50 mL beakers
  9. Stir rod
  10. Pasteur pipet

Solutions:

  1. HCl solution of the following concentrations:
    0.1 M, 0.01 M, 0.001 M
  2. NaOH solution of the following concentrations:
    0.1 M, 0.01 M, 0.001 M
  3. 1 M CH3COOH solution
  4. 0.1 M NH4OH solution
  5. Acid-base indicators:
    phenolphthalein, methyl orange, bromothymol blue
  6. Buffer solutions (pH 4, 7, and 10)

Solids:

  • Sodium acetate, CH3COONa

Common Household Substances:

  1. Vinegar
  2. Coca-cola
  3. Windex
