Experiment 6 - Solutions

Procedure:

Part D - Energy Changes Associated with Substances Dissolving in Water

  1. Obtain 4 large test tubes and pour about 5 mL of distilled water into each test tube.
  2. Record the temperature of the water in the test tube.
  3. Use a spatula and place a heaping scoop of NH4Cl in the first test tube. Mix with a glass rod to dissolve it and record the maximum or minimum temperature reached.
  4. Repeat step 3 for KOH, KNO3, and anhydrous CuSO4 using the other 3 test tubes.
