Part B - Compare the Relative Solubility
of Two solutes in Two solvents
INSTRUCTOR DEMONSTRATION
Add about 5 mL of water and 3 mL of hexane to a test tube carefully, without
mixing. Observe the relative position of each liquid. (Note:
Avoid inhaling hexane vapours since they are toxic).
Add a few crystals of iodine,
I2, to the test tube carefully, without mixing.
Insert a stopper and leave standing for about 30 minutes. Observe the appearance
of each layer.
Repeat steps 1 and 2 except add copper(II) suplfate pentahydrate, CuSO4· 5H2O, crystals instead
of iodine,
I2, crystals.
